Of the 1.3 billion school eligible children globally, some 244 million are unable to access school due to poverty, child labor and lack of infrastructure. Most of these students are located in developing countries which are plagued with these issues. In developed countries, while some 20-30% of students have exposure to programming, primarily through formal education and co-curricular activities, only 5-10% of students have this exposure in developing countries, where children largely rely on online platforms and NGOs.
In today’s rapidly advancing digital world, coding has become a crucial skill, and is shaping the future of many industries and professions. Programming and Digital literacy would become a necessary and non-negotiable skill in the employment market over the next few years. In the last few decades, it has also become a part of most school curriculums, encouraging students to become computer literate from an early age.
Underserved communities which have limited access to learning materials and infrastructure, are liable to miss out on developing this newly essential skill. This challenge is exacerbated by the fact that traditional educational resources are often not designed to cater to a full spectrum of communities. This disparity not only hinders their academic and professional growth but also perpetuates a vicious cycle of exclusion that carries forward overtime.
LetsCode was created to bring about lasting change in the lives of these students. Our mission is to bring together the resources, platforms and invested volunteers to deliver these goals. Our vision is to help create a world where students, regardless of their background, are able to participate in the modern world and its rapidly changing requirements.
